On the 2nd of October, the Senior room headed to the Dunamaise Theatre in Portlaoise to be one of five schools lucky enough to be part of an audience for scientist Mark Lantry’s presentation, ‘Extreme Adventures’. From the moment we arrived, we knew that the following hour was going to be amazing. The stage was set up with lots of science apparatus that had us wondering what we would get to see.
First up was our own volunteer, Harry, who was asked to come to the stage and demonstrate to the audience the impact of greenhouse gases on our planet. Harry did an amazing job, and there was lots of good humour throughout his demonstration. We also looked at some optical illusions, which were mind-boggling!
Mark himself is a storm chaser, which led to Keeva being asked to volunteer to become part of a storm-chasing team.
One experiment that we might leave to Mark involved demonstrating how, with just water, gas and washing-up liquid, we could set our hand on fire with no consequence! It was both thrilling and a little scary, but Mark assured us it was perfectly safe.
The show was high energy, and it inspired the pupils to feel powerful about the future and make a positive impact on the world. What a great afternoon spent being in awe of the wonders of science that are all around us!
